MANTIS Sensor Networks:

Our Vision:

In Project MANTIS, we are building hardware, software, tools, networking protocols and security algorithms to assist in creating next-generation wireless sensor networks (WSNs).  We are working towards a unified framework where well-designed WSNs seamlessly connect into a context-aware smart space.  Today, we already see a proliferation of sensors that track motion, temperature, sound, light/vision, humidity, and a host of other activities.  These sensors are rapidly becoming embedded into everyday spaces such as the home, office, and public spaces.  [I am offering a graduate seminar on sensor networks in Fall 2003].

Our Research:

We are focusing on the following aspects of sensor networking:
  • Low power wireless networking
  • Location-aware sensor networking and localization
    • Location determination using 802.11b.  We are working on extending these algorithms into WSNs.

One team of students is working on each of these problems.  As time permits, we will provide updates here.
