Be an Open Textbook Author ... Please

October 17, 2007

This is still a grassroots movement. There is currently only one open textbook, a manuscript that I am writing about operating systems for small computers. This particular manuscript started by reorganizing and rewriting materials from my OS book about conventional systems. The immediate authorship opportunities are to fix the parts of the OS for single-threaded computers manuscript that are broken, to add new parts to the outline, or to start on one of three other booklet ideas:

I would like to see these books written in same manner as Linux was developed. There was a single original author, but gradually there became many authors and an OS that lots of people liked. It would be nice if we could develop some books like that. Besides the gratification of publication, it also solves a huge problem for our students — they are getting killed by the cost of textbooks.
