Does anyone else have any other tricks? How about other compilers?

Others in class have also had this problem. I am TA'ing 2270 in the whitewater lab, and our students' code will not compile on these machines with g++ either. Ops is aware of the problem but may not be able to do anything about it. We cope by ssh'ing to bfs (a csel machine), compiling and running there, and setting the display to whatever machine we are using in whitewater. That ought to work for you as well
Perhaps the grader can do this for the demos?
