Here is what I think we got done; please let me know if I've forgotten or mangled anything. As always, you can find the agenda and other materials - including this message - archived at www.cs.colorado.edu/~lizb/bfa-iac.html ------ - Spring semester meetings: 11am-noon on 14 Jan, 4 Feb, 3 Mar, 7 April, and 5 May. Location still TBD; Ted is working on getting the 11th floor of the Gamow tower and Bob suggests CIRES S274 as a backup. - Ceal suggested Xavier Silas from MBB as a student-athlete rep for this committee. This suggestion was approved and I will contact him. - The BFA resolution on intercollegiate athletics needs recrafting, particularly the "Be it resolved" paragraph. This could greatly benefit from our discussions of the COIA report, and we decided to table the rewriting until after COIA. (Specific comments: replace "fulfill" by "fulfill and encouraged to exceed" in the 2nd 'whereas'; find a way to include more language about the good things that athletics does; replace "the role" in the 3rd whereas by "an appropriate role"; punt the sixth bullet altogether.) - The BFA motion on athletics/academics interaction also needs a careful revision. We will work on this over the year. (Specific comments: Martha suggested adding something about tutoring in particular and how the Herbst center works in general. Section IV needs a total rewrite, which I think Ceal volunteered to do (?). Bob suggested adding something about conflict resolution; Uriel agreed that this was an appropriate thing for the BFA to do. [ED. NOTE: this broadening needs some serious discussion, as it represents a real change and a potential can of worms. Let's think it through VERY carefully before proceeding.] Dave suggested adding and/or referencing Athletics' ethics document, which is underway. Bob worried about the clause excluding club sports; Liz pointed out that the BAB's discussions will sort some of that out and suggested that we wait to discuss this issue. - The committee discussed the IAC charge. Liz will email around a draft of the results of this discussion. That document has various "need to add blah" comments that need particular attention. Please send Liz your suggestions, comments, additions, deletions, concerns, etc. She will work on the next draft over the next few weeks and hopefully produce something that we can vote on at our next meeting. Liz, Steve, and Ted will work with Barbara and the BAB to transmit these changes and make sure the charges line up (e.g., the mention of *four* overlapping faculty members in the BAB's charge, voting privileges, ...) - With one minute remaining, Liz noted that we were already behind schedule on the agenda for the year that she sent out a month ago (appended below *), but that the division of labor between the IAC and the BAB that is laid out in the new charge opened up a lot of room in that agenda (viz., no title ix, no club sports, ...). - In the last 40 seconds of the meeting, we agreed to 'triage' the recommendations in COIA document into the following categories: - "are already doing this" - "should do this" - "would like to do this, but problematic" - "shouldn't do this" (either because we don't agree with it or because we can't do anything about it...e.g., NCAA-level changes) That will be the 'homework' item for next time. Liz (*) Old agenda, with MODIFICATIONS IN CAPS ------------------------------------------ November: review IAC & BAB charges; start discussing COIA December: finish discussing COIA and put together a BFA motion re: same January: Gender equity/Title IX [CAN NOW USE TO FINISH COIA and HAVE A REPORT FROM CEAL ABOUT THE HERBST CENTER] February: Club sports [CAN NOW USE FOR BFA INVOLVEMENT RESOLUTION, ETC.] March: Faculty involvement in recruiting (student-athletes) and hiring (staff) April: Leakage May: Wrap-up; report synthesis; planning for next year
