I am a PhD candidate in the Computer Science Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. As a member of Professor Leysia Palen's Project EPIC (Empowering the Public in Crisis) team, I investigate the use of information communication technology (ICT) during crises and mass emergencies with particular attention to how social media are affecting formal emergency response agencies. My perspective is unusual because I conduct empirical and social analysis of these formal responders and design, prototype, and implement technologies that help them better use social media in their work.
I received my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Brigham Young University and my Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder. In my graduate education I have trained in human computer interaction, qualitative social methods, and disaster science.
