The Art of Math, The Math of Art

Ted Chen, Rebecca Jones, Eric Serfoss

The Art of Math, The Math of Art is a "museum" exhibit that has been designed to demonstrate some of the principles of curves in space in a beautiful and artistic fashion. Beautiful curves can be seen in such structures as suspension bridges and arches. Complex surfaces can be seen in the vaulted ceilings of cathedrals. Such curves and surfaces may appear complex and difficult to draw or construct. However, all curves can be described by a series or sequence of straight lines (representing the tangents at all points along the curve). The Art of Math, The Math of Art describes parabolas using string art in three dimensions. While simultaneously demonstrating the beauty inherent in complex string sculptures, it also illustrates the most basic principle of curves in space.
