Configurable Chaotic Pendulum

John Houck, Keasa Jones, David Mankin

Chaos causes systems to behave erratically and unpredictably because it has large sensitivity to initial conditions. A simple pendulum is predictable and regular. A chaotic pendulum is neither. We have developed a museum exhibit that allows visitors to transform a regular pendulum into a chaotic pendulum and observe the differences. The chaotic pendulum also creates a momento that the user can take home as a souvenir of their visit and a reminder of the concepts learned.
