The Fisherman: An Automaton in Cabaret Style

Steve Kiser, Scott Nusz, Lisa Retrum

Our automaton has the theme of 'The Fisherman.' The idea is that a fisherman is sitting in his boat while he fishes in the sea. As he sits in his boat, it floats along, and the waves pass him by. The abundant fish jump through the water as he fishes. Our automaton uses several different interacting mechanisms to achieve this story line and all of these motions. Specifically, it uses cranks, shafts, drive trains, gears, and other mechanisms. These mechanisms are made from wood, plastic, and some metal, and attached with various glues and screws to make them all function together. Rubber bands play a crucial role in the project.
