The Second International Workshop on Structural Computing Call For Papers ACM Hypertext 2000 San Antonio, Texas, USA Saturday, June 3, 2000 Introduction The hypermedia community has engaged in open hypermedia research for well over a decade. Open hypermedia is an approach to providing hypermedia services to multiple users over heterogeneous information managed by an open set of applications. The community has fielded a number of hypermedia systems that provide the infrastructure which enables open hypermedia services within a computing environment. These systems provide tools to manage hypermedia information and supply software development resources (such as example code, APIs, etc.) that enable the integration of open hypermedia services into existing applications. Recently, the programmatic interface to open hypermedia systems has been standardized in the Open Hypermedia Protocol developed by the open hypermedia community. Open hypermedia systems have addressed a number of interesting and difficult problems involving collaboration, versioning, integration, interoperability, heterogeneity, and supporting the hypermedia needs of industrial settings. In recent years, open hypermedia has made it out of the research lab and into commercial products. However, the conceptual foundations of open hypermedia, its underlying structures and behaviors, have all focused on supporting one task: navigation among information. While these structures are flexible enough to be applied to other domains, the mappings are often inefficient and unsatisfying. In fact, concurrent with open hypermedia research, several researchers were exploring domains such as spatial hypermedia and taxonomic hypermedia that required conceptual foundations markedly different from those used to support navigational hypermedia. As a result of this situation, a new approach has emerged that attempts to unify these, and other, disparate domains under a common conceptual foundation that allows the lessons learned from conducting over a decade's worth of research on open hypermedia to be applied to problems in these new domains. This approach is called structural computing. Structural computing "asserts the primacy of structure over data" [1] and aims to develop a set of principles, techniques, and technology that can be used by developers as resources for developing applications in new domains. The First International Workshop on Structural Computing was held, last year, as part of the 1999 ACM Conference on Hypertext. At that workshop, a variety of researchers representing various areas of study presented requirements placed on the new field of structural computing by their respective domains. Collecting these requirements are an important activity for the structural computing field and requirements papers are welcome at this workshop. However, this workshop also encourages the submission of papers concerning the application of structural computing ideas to real problems, as well as work reporting on experimental prototypes of structural computing infrastructure. The goal, then, of the Second International Workshop on Structural Computing is to bring researchers interested in structural computing together for intense discussion of its ideas and techniques. Please join us in making this workshop a success! Paper Topics The workshop is looking for short paper submissions on the following topics: * domain requirements for structural computing e.g. use of structure in a particular domain and the implications these structures have for structural computing * theoretical foundations of structural computing * structural computing prototypes e.g. prototype "structure servers", evaluation of example structural computing applications, etc. Paper Requirements Accepted papers will be published as part of a joint post-workshop Proceedings with the OHS6 Workshop by Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series. Please prepare your manuscript following the Author's Instructions. Your paper should be between 7 and not more than 10 pages in length. Submissions not following these guidelines cannot be published!!! While these guidelines are somewhat onerous, matching the constraints ahead of time will allow us to get the proceedings published as soon as possible after the workshop. Submit your paper no later than March 15, 2000 encoded as PDF via e-mail to . Submitted papers will be refereed; after your presentation at the workshop you will have the opportunity to update your paper and submit a final version which will then be published. Deadlines Submissions are due: March 15, 2000 Notification of acceptance: April 12, 2000 Location The workshop will take place at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX.
