I have now uploaded the lion share of class presentations that hadn't yet made it to the website. Check out the Lectures page for more details. I also finished grading all of the projects and will be uploading the grades to the Registrar later this afternoon.

Three quick reminders: please send me the slides from any presentations you made over the semester (if you have not done so already), please send me (or point me to) your write-up for the team project (just one copy from each team) and finally send me your team evaluations (one e-mail message from each team member with an evaluation of your teammates performance on this project).

I'm finalizing the schedule for today's class. If I remember correctly, we have the following presentations lined up:

Two presentations on Google Web Toolkit

One presentation on Web 2.0 mashups

One presentation on Ghost, a Web 2.0 virtual computer

One presentation on Coghead, Bungee Connect, and Heroku

If you were planning on presenting today but don't see your topic listed above, let me know, so I can update the list.

Also for the week after Thanksgiving, I have the following presentations lined up:

One presentation on Ubiquity, a Firefox extension related to mashups

Recall that you need to have made at least three presentations over the semester, so if you still have presentations to give, then please sign up for making presentations on Dec. 3rd and Dec 10th (but recall that most of Dec. 10th will be devoted to seeing the final project presentations from each of our teams).

Need Volunteers for Week 13 and Week 14

I need volunteers for presentations during the next two weeks of class (the week before Fall break and the week after). The presentations can focus on Web 2.0 topics or can return to REST and/or SOAP if you like. Recall that each student needs to present three times over the course of the semester, so I should be receiving a flood of volunteers for these next two weeks.

Week 15, the last week of class, will be devoted to presentations of the semester projects.

Hi,

Here are some links to readings that can be used as the basis for student presentations. If you decide to create a presentation around one of these readings please let me know. (Indeed, if you plan to present this coming Wednesday, definitely send me a message so I can get you on the agenda.

First, I would love a presentation on the chapters of Roy Fielding's dissertation that started the entire discussion on RESTful web services. In particular, chapter 5 and chapter 6.

Second, Tim Bray's weblog has a section that lists all of his posts that are related to Web Services. (Warning: Tim is very much anti-SOAP/Big Web Services.) There are several posts on that page that can be used to create a presentation for this class including:

Important I Think

We should balance Tim Bray with pro-SOAP/Big Web Services perspective. One person might be Don Box from Microsoft. Any student interested in looking for some pro-SOAP articles for us to consider. I have one pointer:

I have one student interested in pitching an idea for a semester project and two students who have volunteered to give presentations (Pete and Steven). Pete will be presenting a Web-Services based system that he works on professionally and Steven will be giving a demo of NetBeans support for BPEL.

Wiki for Posting Pointers to Seminar-Related Topics

In the Useful Links section located on the right hand side of each page of this class website is a new link called "Web Service Resources". It takes you to a wiki that I have created in the class moodle for the students of this class to post any pointers to seminar-related topics that they find.

I have a bunch of links to add but in the meantime feel free to jump in and add links, organize the page, etc.

When you click on the link, the moodle website is going to ask you to enroll in the moodle. To do so, please use the following enrollment key: SOAPweb2.0REST

If you don't have an account on the moodle, it will first ask you to create an account and then you can enroll in this class and access the wiki page. To edit the wiki page, you will need to understand "Wiki Markup"; fortunately, the moodle help system contains a page that discusses the basics. If you have any questions about that, send me e-mail and I'll try to help you out.

So, please take a look and start adding links!

Thanks for the great class session yesterday! I greatly enjoyed seeing the class generate some discussion yesterday; I liked the two student presentations and the technology demonstrations. One quick announcement: I'm going to push the UDDI chapter to lecture 4. So, next week, lecture 3 will focus on SOAP and WSDL. Any volunteers?

Also, I will start posting the slides and code used yesterday to the Lectures section today. Jude and Matt, would you please send me the materials that you presented?

Looking for Volunteers

For the 2nd class session, we are going to talk about XML and SOAP, corresponding to chapters 3 and 4. Take a look at those chapters and see if you would like to present on some aspect of the chapters. I especially need people who are willing to give the "big picture" overview of these technologies and others that are willing to look at some of the nitty gritty details (such as namespaces in XML) and/or the technologies that are available for dealing with these two specifications.

If you are interested in presenting next week, send me a message by Friday so I can coordinate the speakers and make sure we don't have significant overlap.

Slides for Lecture One

Hi. Thanks very much for attending the first class session today. I have posted four sets of slides on the Lectures page for this session. One set of slides was not covered in class but is the slides that the author of the book created to cover the material in Chapter 2 of our textbook. One set is the slides I used to introduce the course and the other two are the slides I used to talk about distributed information systems and middleware.

Hi. I plan to discuss the first two chapters of the Web services textbook tomorrow for our first class session. You are not required to have finished reading those chapters by 4 PM tomorrow, but if you can start reading those chapters it will allow you to come to class tomorrow with questions.

I will be working on class prep. for this seminar all day tomorrow, so expect several updates to this website throughout the day.
