DreamQuest Software and Bonzoid Studios are closely-related game development
companies both located in Louisville, Colorado. They specialize in casual
gaming and were considering entering the Nintendo market. The goal was to
create a prototype of a "hidden object" game for the Nintendo DS that could be
presented to publishers at the annual Game Developers Conference in February. A
hidden object game, similar to Where's Waldo or I Spy, would
work well for the Nintendo DS because of both the single touch screen and its
already casual gaming market.
The project team developed a playable prototype for the Tablet PC using a Harry
Potter theme. The object is to help Harry, on the top screen, get from one side
to the other by finding objects on the bottom screen that he can use to
negotiate obstacles. The game features a hint system, infinite room scrolling,
and inspectable environments. The team and the art department at DreamQuest
collaborated to deliver stunning animations and appealing graphics.
The prototype was implemented in Flash and ActionScript.
