Graphical Display of Weather Data
Senior Project: 1991-1992
Jeremy Asbill, Chen-Chen Hwang and Paul Pinkney
Unidata is a program within the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research
for improving the accessibility and usefulness of scientific data to
atmospheric scientists at universities. Unidata provides real time weather data
broadcast via satellite along with software and support for systems that
capture and analyze the data on networks of scientific workstations in
university departments.
The goal of this project was to create a graphical user interface for the
access and display of weather data by non-technical users. The software
provides an interface in which users point to locations on a map and receive
various types of weather information for that location. Depending on user
selections, this information might include forecasts, current conditions,
aviation reports, ski information, etc. The software was designed to make it
easy to develop and add new "modules", providing new types of weather
information, to the system. The group designed and developed the underlying
framework for the system, and also developed three modules -- current weather,
forecasts, and help. The project was implemented in C, using OpenWindows and
the XView toolkit.
