Electronic Software Distribution

Senior Project: 2000-2001
Indrani Datta, Christopher Edwards, Nathan Koch, Joshua Lopez and Jason Porter
Boulder, CO

Electric Rain produces several products that allow users to create quick and easy 3D animations for use on the Web. One of their major hurdles is delivering software to customers quickly and securely, while keeping costs down. Outsourced electronic software distribution (ESD) has proven to be a poor solution, prompting a search for new answers. The proposal was to design, develop, and document an ESD system that can take the place of the current ESD solution.

The system consists of two components: a Server and a Client Installer. After a customer purchases an Electric Rain product, they will download a copy of the Client Installer that contains an order ID and a product ID. The Client Installer collects the customer's credit card number and transmits it in encrypted form to the Server. The Server uses this information to validate the order and then initiates the transfer of the executable product file. Once the file is transferred, the Client installer runs the executable.
