eSoft is an Internet software company, located in Broomfield, Colorado, which
develops Internet security and management appliances targeted at small to
medium sized enterprises. Their products are affordable, high performance
Internet software applications and network devices. These devices provide basic
Internet applications, managed services, and business-to-business solutions.
One of the major tasks facing eSoft's enterprise customers was the management
of numerous network appliances. There are software packages such as Spectrum
and HP OpenView, which provide customers with advanced network management.
Unfortunately, these network management software packages were very expensive.
In addition, eSoft devices were not compatible with these commercial network
management packages.
The first goal of this project was to enable eSoft's larger customers with more
expensive network management software to monitor and control eSoft's network
devices. The second goal was to enable eSoft's smaller customers who do not own
expensive network management software to monitor and control multiple eSoft
network devices.
The resulting system is a remote network configuration tool designed for use
with eSoft's network appliances. The system consists of two components. The
first component is a graphical tool that can be used to configure eSoft's
network appliances, while the second component is an SNMP agent that can be
used to configure these devices using a commercial network management system.
