Online Academic Advising System
Senior Project: 2002-2003
The Department of Computer Science offers BS, MS, ME, and PhD degrees
in Computer Science. With more than 500 undergraduates, the department was in
need of a productive academic advising system, and although there were attempts
to create software-based advising systems in the past, they were retired
because they were not accessible enough to the students and were very difficult
to maintain. Since then, countless hours have been spent manually filling out
degree audits, going over transfer decisions, and advising students about
possible course choices. This is not only inefficient, but it is also prone to
error.
The goal of this project was to eliminate most of this manual work by providing
a simple, accessible, and robust interface for students and academic advisors
alike. The software supports three different user types: students, advisors,
and administrators. Students may perform degree audits, view their transcripts,
view their transfer and waiver decisions, and do future course planning.
Advisors not only can perform these same functions on a student-by-student
basis, but can also manage general transfer rules. Finally, administrators are
able to manage advisors and setup and maintain graduation requirements.
The system was developed in a Red Hat Linux environment using PHP and MySQL.
