Redefine Technologies is a very small company based in Golden, Colorado.
The company was formed in 1995 with the purpose of creating websites for
various companies, both large and small. In 2000, the company teamed up with
several leading aerospace groups and began the production of embedded
systems for various space applications, ranging from NASA to NORAD missions.
There are many devices that people use in their cars today that require the
user to look away from the road to operate them. This, of course, could cause
accidents. Redefine Technologies wanted to create a product -- the Vehicle
Digital Assistant (VDA) -- that would address this issue. The VDA would provide
a speech-based interface to these devices, creating a safer driving environment
by allowing a hands-and-eyes-free in-car interface. The VDA would provide
services that include the ability to make and receive phone calls, an address
book facility, GPS-based driving directions and world news.
The group designed and developed the software components of this VDA. This
entailed setting up the operating system, setting up communication between the
user and the various peripherals (utilizing an online voice interaction system,
BeVocal Café and VoiceXML),
and developing a voice-response interface that a driver can use safely to
access the services.
