3D Model Viewer/Converter
Senior Project: 2005-2006
Electric Rain, Inc. has been a privately held corporation since 1998 with
headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. They have spent the past few years
developing 3D applications, enabling users to build vector-based 3D objects
and to manipulate their shape, lighting, camera angles, color and more.
In preparation for the release of Microsoft's new operating system, Windows
Vista, a need has arisen for updating the current file format(s) to the new
Vista-supported standard, XAML ((Extensible Application Markup Language).
Windows Vista supports a new software library called WinFX, running on top of
the .NET framework. The Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a subset of
WinFX that is dedicated to controlling how Windows creates, displays, and
manipulates documents, media and user interfaces. The WPF utilizes a new markup
language called XAML, a serialization format that allows one to express an
object model using XML-based code.
Realizing how intricately XAML is linked into WPF, a need to convert
proprietary internal formats created by third party 3D authoring tools into
XAML has become apparent. The goal of this project was to create a stand-alone
application that will allow the user to load 3DS and PRJ file formats,
visually preview the translated XAML file in a window, play any associated
animations within the file, and finally to export the converted file to XAML.
