Web Mountain Technologies is a developer and manufacturer of a whole house
server, called NetPlace. This server provides capabilities in the areas of
managing Internet access (includes a NAT router and firewall), local area
networking (simple setup, wireless LAN, etc.), home automation control,
computing capabilities (file server, email server, print server, etc.),
and many other capabilities. This server uses the Linux operating system.
One piece missing from the server was an entertainment feature set. With the
file server capability, NetPlace can act as a central storage facility for
entertainment content, most notably music files and video files. However, the
only method for NetPlace to play this content was through the existing LAN to a
PC that requested the files.
The project provides the desired capabilities, including a wealth of multimedia
functionality, as a standalone complement to the NetPlace product.
This single unit encompasses a digital juke box, a digital video recorder, and
CD burner.
The project was implemented in C++ in a Linux environment.
