Sun Microsystems is a Silicon Valley-based company specializing in server
hardware, operating systems, networking technologies, Java, and software
development for e-commerce and embedded systems. In the last two years Sun has
developed Jiro and Jini technologies, which provide the specifications for
building a dynamic network community of services. Jiro delivers technology for
the management of storage, servers, applications and devices on networks
enabling true integration and platform-independence. Jini allows a network of
services to be easily assembled, disassembled and maintained.
The Network Storage Division of Sun is moving to a Jiro-based network for the
storage management and administration of their SAN's (Storage Area Network).
The idea behind this project was to develop a servlet-based storage management
console for a Jiro network.
The "console" is a set of Java servlets, accessible through a web browser, that
allow access to management functionality exposed by Jiro-enabled components
that are located in the network. The servlets listen for Jini-Lookup
registration events and perform lookups of Jiro deployment stations and/or
other Jiro-enabled services. The "console" presents a "navigation" frame on
which the Jiro-enabled services that have been discovered on the network are
represented, as well as a frame in which servlets associated with each service
are exposed.
