Web-Based Interface for Accessing Genomics Data

Methods for identifying chromosomal regions containing genes have been used to
identify many quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The information available
regarding this research is scattered among many facilities, and not all of the
information is available to the public. A research group at the University of
Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC), Department of Pharmacology and Human
Medical Genetics Program felt there was interest in the scientific research
community involved in this research in creating a database that consolidates
this existing research. UCHSC wanted to develop a genomics database and an
accompanying website that will maintain information about the chromosomal
regions that have been implicated as containing genes that influence
addiction-related phenotypes.
This project provides an internet-based application containing a genomics
database and an accompanying web site. The database holds a collection of data
about chromosomal regions called quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and the web
site provides the user with a graphical user interface (GUI) that is used to
access the data in the database. It provides a means for scientists to view
information about known QTLs and enables them to submit their own discoveries
for inclusion into the database. The project was implemented in Perl using an
Oracle database in a Solaris environment.
