Senior Project - eMedia

Multi-Media Caller ID

Senior Project: 2004-2005
Derek Beauregard, Nicholas Joseph, Nicholas Lamb and Brian Overstreet
Boulder, CO

The project sponsors were interested in prototyping the concept of embedded-device media services that are not reliant upon network providers. In particular, they wanted to prove that users need not be dependent on their service providers for media such as ringtones, background pictures, videos, etc.

The main objective of the project was to provide users the capability to upload their own media files to a server and to associate those media files with contacts and their phone numbers in an address list on the user's mobile phone. This allows users to have their own media files play when an incoming call is received, rather than having to purchase media from their service provider. The software also implements a paging strategy, keeping only the most likely to be used media on the phone and only downloading other media from the server as necessary. This provides the user the illusion that they can store an unlimited number of media files on their mobile device.

The project provides a server with a web-based interface which allows users to create accounts, setup contacts and their phone numbers, and upload media files. It also provides client software on the phone that implements media playback and the paging strategy. Server software was developed in PHP, while the mobile phone software was developed using the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) environment.
