The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is part of a collaborative
community dedicated to understanding the atmosphere -- the air around us -- and
the interconnected processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean
floor to the Sun's core. NCAR provides research, facilities, and services for
the atmospheric and Earth sciences community and is managed by the nonprofit
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
In the process of pursuing NCAR's mission, employees need to schedule the
various rooms located at a number of different NCAR sites. An existing room
reservation system had been in use for over eight years, but had slowly become
difficult to use and maintain and lacked new features desired by the user
community. The goal of this project was to provide a more functional, more
maintainable and easy-to-use web-based room reservation system.
The system allows users to view and manage reservation and setup information
without administrator intervention. Additional features include finding
available rooms, repeated reservations, and automatic reservation confirmation.
The system was developed in Java and uses the PostgreSQL relational database.
