Senior Project - comrad

Web-Based Community Radio Administration

Senior Project: 2009-2010
Thomas Buzbee, Bryan Callahan, Eric Freese, Stephanie Pitts and Timothy (Wil) St. Charles
Boulder, CO

KGNU Community Radio station managers, music directors, and DJs work together to record information about what goes "On Air". All of these people had to use many forms of communication and a mix of technologies and paper-based systems to accomplish their daily administration tasks. These tasks included recording what was played on the air, what shows were scheduled and when they were scheduled, and what music was in the station's digital catalog. This led to a duplication of efforts and a cumbersome and clumsy administration system.

The goal of this project was to address these administration issues. By using contemporary technologies and completely redesigning the way information is recorded and viewed, comrad has created an improved, web-based administration system. Some of the functions that comrad has implemented include

  • a fully functioning calendaring system

  • an entire scheduling engine including a full featured recurrence engine

  • a music management system that allows the station to manage their music without hassle

  • an intuitive and beautiful UI built from customized jQuery components

  • an interface to Amazon's storefront API which allows KGNU to add albums straight from Amazon's database

Together these components provide a system that will help simplify the life of KGNU administrators, DJs, and music directors.
