Text Analyzer to Support Natural Language Translation
Senior Project: 1995-1996
International Language Engineering is a company providing services for software
localization (adapting software for the international market). Specializing in
multi-language and multi-platform localization projects, ILE currently
translates into over 25 languages. Because of the nature of its business, ILE
is heavily involved in the development of tools for localization, ranging from
document filters to terminology databases, from multi-locale-enabled libraries
to innovative translation memory technology.
One of the first steps of translating a set of documents is to isolate its
terminology. The project provides an application that allows the extraction of
phrases that might be of interest to a translator from a document, and to then
build an ordered list of these phrases, based on how "interesting" they might
be. A graphical user interface then presents these phrases to the translator,
allowing them to select phrases to be added to a glossary. The software was
developed using an object-oriented approach and runs on the PC under Windows.
