ReadyTalk provides audio and web conferencing services to allow their customers
to conduct business more effectively. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in
Denver, Colorado, ReadyTalk strives to provide ever evolving technologies to
its customers and strongly supports open-source software.
Following this goal ReadyTalk desired to create a proof of concept "YouTube
style video service" that could be used in business applications. YouTube and
other similar services are deficient for business applications in that the
videos generally hosted on the service are of lower quality, the videos are not
downloadable, often have numerous advertisements, and the services are
generally designed for the purpose of entertainment. Adding video services to
their current business model would help ReadyTalk provide the range of services
their customers require.
The system provides the basic functionality necessary for a video site --
uploading, searching, viewing and rating videos -- but also improves on those
features to provide the quality of service that ReadyTalk desired. Videos are
downloadable; all videos are encoded in the high-quality H.264 format, which
makes them compatible for playback on mobile devices; and the entire service is
ad-free. In addition, the user interface is straightforward and consistent with
other similar video services, so users can quickly get started with the service.
The service was implemented in Java and developed using all open-source
technologies, such as Apache Struts, FFmpeg, MySQL, and Hibernate.
