DreamQuest Software develops two very popular card games, Championship Hearts
and Championship Spades, for the PC market. As Personal Digital Assistants
(PDAs), such as the Palm, have become increasingly popular, DreamQuest was
interested in providing these games for the PDA environment.
The goal of the project was to provide a port of Championship Hearts and
Championship Spades to Java, which would then eventually run under PalmOS. The
port needed to maintain backwards compatibility with the Visual Basic AI code
of the original products, since the strength of the AI is a key differentiator
of these products from other competing versions of the games.
Instability of current Java Virtual Machines for the Palm precluded the port to
the Palm; however, the group was able to develop an applet version designed for
the smaller screen of the Palm and other handheld devices.
