The Department of Computer Science once had a system that allowed students to
check their progress towards fulfilling the degree requirements for a BS or
minor in Computer Science. However, the system became difficult to maintain and
was made obsolete. This resulted in the dependence upon "pencil and paper"
checking of the fulfillment of degree requirements, a tedious, time-consuming,
and error-prone task. As an alternative, a new online academic advising system
was proposed.
The system allows students, advisors, or administrators to log on and access
their respective web pages. The student user can view their progress towards
the degree, add planned future classes to the system, and save this data for
future degree audit and planning sessions. The advisor, in addition to being
able to assist students with their planning and degree audits, can also make
specific transfer/waiver decisions for students. Finally, an administrator
can create and manage arbitrary sets of requirements that can be used in
performing degree audits. The system was implemented in PHP.
