Industry Co-op and Internship Programs

There are several programs that afford undergraduate Computer Science majors the opportunity to incorporate industry experience into their degree programs:

Industry Co-op Program

The Co-op Program allows students to work full time for companies in paid positions during summers as well as during one or more semesters while not enrolled in classes. The Department does not organize this work, nor does it give academic credit for the co-op. However, the Department does suggest a curriculum to students allowing them to work full time with the company during the summers as well as during the springs of their second and fourth years, while still graduating in five years. See BS Degree Requirements for degree requirements along with sample curricula, including a suggested curriculum for students interested in pursuing a co-op program. In addition, Career Services provides coordination and resources for students and industry interested in participating in the program.

Industry Internship Program

The Internship Program allows students to work part-time during the school year and/or full time during breaks and summers while being continuously enrolled during the fall and spring semesters. Like the Co-op Program, these are usually paid positions. The Department does not organize this work, nor does it give academic credit for the internship. However, the Department posts internship announcements on the Computer Science Jobs Mail List. In addition, Career Services provides coordination and resources for students and industry interested in participating in the program.

Senior Project

The Senior Software Engineering Project course is a two semester sequence in which teams of students complete a substantial "real world" project provided by sponsors drawn from both industry and research organizations. These projects are developed under the direction of the course instructor and members of the sponsoring organization. The Department is heavily involved in the organization and management of these projects and gives academic credit for them as well.
