Integrated Scheduling and Beam Steering for Spatial Reuse

Common multiple-access techniques for wireless networks, such as CSMA, TDMA, CDMA, and FDMA, serve to divide an essentially fixed channel capacity between users. A key to increasing the total capacity is spatial reuse: By taking advantage of the (partial) channel separation between physically separate terminals, multiple flows can coexist with an aggregate capacity gain. This dissertation considers the combination of reconfigurable directional antennas, which serve to increase channel separation, and explicit spatial reuse TDMA scheduling to take advantage of that separation. I argue that some measure of integration between antenna control and scheduling is necessary in order to realize the available gains, and present such an integrated approach. The system is based on an optimal distributed algorithm for the joint problem, which is the primary focus of this dissertation and talk.
