Wireless Communication Networks: Mobility, Connectivity, and Epidemics

The emergence of large-scale communication and computing networks, including the Internet, mobile wireless networks, and sensor networks, is presenting unprecedented demands in terms of performance, scalability, mobility, reliability and security, as well as economic viability. In the first part of the talk, we present an overview of our major research results and ongoing projects in these areas, including 1) cross-layer design and dynamic resource allocation for next-generation wireless networks; 2) groundbreaking content centric architectures for future Internet design, and 3) an economic framework for pricing, incentives, and competition in networks of selfish agents.

In the second part of the talk, we focus on a unique set of opportunities and challenges brought about by the proliferation of mobile wireless networks. Mobile wireless communication and computing greatly enhance network connectivity. On the other hand, this enhanced connectivity can easily be exploited by viruses and worms to rapidly infect large networks, resulting in a "wireless epidemic." Building on the theory of random geometric graphs and percolation, we characterize the rate at which both legitimate traffic and viruses/worms can spread in large-scale fixed and mobile wireless networks, as a function of underlying network parameters and mobility patterns. Furthermore, we establish the conditions under which a wireless network can (or cannot) survive a correlated and cascading virus epidemic. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for predicting widespread blackouts in the electrical power grid.

Edmund Yeh received his BS in Electrical Engineering with Distinction from Stanford University in 1994, his MPhil in Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 1995, and his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT under Professor Robert Gallager in 2001. He is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Statistics at Yale University.

Professor Yeh is the recipient of a Humboldt Research Fellowship, an Army Research Office Young Investigator Award, the Winston Churchill Scholarship, the National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research Graduate Fellowships, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the Frederick Emmons Terman Engineering Scholastic Award, and the President's Award for Academic Excellence (Stanford University). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi.
