A New Way to Cope With Wireless Interference

The performance of wireless networks is limited by interference. Recently, emerging technologies in the broad area of interference cancellation is enabling powerful possibilities. One such possibility is called message-in-message (MIM). An MIM-enabled wireless transceiver characterizes the structure of interference by "listening" to it, and then cancels it intelligently to separate out its own signal of interest. The ability to receive a packet in the presence of nearby interference can have profound implications. Communications that were otherwise in conflict (and hence serialized in time), can be made concurrent with MIM. However, fully harnessing this capability will require MIM awareness at the MAC, and higher layer protocols. Transmissions will need to be scheduled such that receivers get a chance to "listen" to the interferer, and thereby cancel it. This requires the MAC layer to intelligently stagger and reorder transmissions in time, such that the MIM capability can take full effect.

This talk will present research results from an ongoing project called Shuffle. We will discuss MIM-aware medium access control for wireless infrastructure networks, and identify several new challenges that merit research attention. Time permitting, I will present a few other ongoing projects at the Systems Networking Research Group (SyNRG) at Duke University.

Romit Choudhury is an Assistant Professor of ECE and CS at Duke University. He joined Duke in 2006, after completing his PhD from UIUC. His research interests are in wireless networking and distributed mobile computing, for which he has received multiple awards, including the NSF CAREER Award in January 2008, the Motorola and Vodafone Award in 2004 and 2005, and the best paper award in the Personal Wireless Conference in 2003.
