Towards Robust Deep Semantic Analysis

The bulk of my research addresses the theoretical and practical issues involved in getting computers to perform useful and interesting tasks involving human language. I am particularly interested in those tasks where some grasp of the meaning of a text is required to adequately accomplish the task at hand, an area of research referred to as Computational Semantics. Within this broad area, I am concerned with the creation of enabling technologies that can robustly and accurately produce meaning representations for arbitrary texts, and with the use of these representations to improve the performance of applications such as question answering, information retrieval and summarization.

In this talk I will quickly review state of the art techniques in natural language processing and present our our efforts in the area of semantic role analysis, event detection and classification, named-entity disambiguation, and entailment. I'll also briefly review our efforts to apply NLP techniques in the areas of digital libraries and cognitive disabilities.
