RealityFlythrough - A System for Ubiquitous Video

There are many situations in which one would like to explore a remote place without the inconvenience or danger of doing so in person. RealityFlythrough is a video telepresence system that works in dynamic, uncalibrated environments. Using commodity networked mobile video cameras and a variety of positioning technologies, it allows a person to immersively explore a remote physical space. The live 2d video feeds are situated in a 3d model of the world. When a person using RealityFlythrough switches from viewing one camera stream to another, cues in the form of a dynamic transition provide a sense of how the camera streams relate to each other in 3d. Attention is paid to the realities of networked first-person video in order to produce a sensible and calm experience. In this talk I introduce the concepts, abstractions, and systems support behind RealityFlythrough, with supporting video clips from field deployments in disaster response training exercises.
