Colloquium - Haddon

The Java "Tiger" Release: Java2 Standard Edition 1.5
Bruce Haddon
Principal Engineer/Master Java Architect, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

J2SE 1.5 (the "Tiger" release) is the next major revision to the Java language and to the Java platform; the compiler and the Java Development Kit (JDK). The materials for this revision are scheduled for release in the latter part of the summer of 2004. The 1.5 release will include 15 component Java Specification Requests (JSR's) to be managed by the Java Community Process (JCP). It will also include major enhancements in quality, monitoring and manageability, performance and scalability, and ease of development. Parts of the 1.5 revision are already available to the registered developer community, and beta versions will be generally available soon.

This talk introduces a cross-section of the changes in the areas of extensions to the Java language, and enhancements to the JDK and other aspects of the Java environment. "Tiger" represents the largest set of extensions to the Java programming language since the changes introduced with Java2.

Dr. Haddon earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1979. Since then he has, amongst other positions, been the Director of the University Computing Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia, a member of the faculty of both the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at CU-Boulder, Vice-President for Engineering at International Language Engineering, and, for the last several years, a software consultant for many of the larger customers and clients of Sun Microsystems, in the US, Canada, and the UK. His computing interests are programming languages, abstract machines, portability, storage management, and software development methodology.

Hosted by William Waite.

Bruce provided a copy of his slides after the conclusion of his talk.
