Scalable Nonlinear Methods and Applications in Computational Sciences

With the recent development of powerful, massively parallel supercomputers and highly effective numerical methods, the solution to fully implicit formulations of many scientific problems has become possible, whereas in the recent past, solving these formulations had been considered intractable. In this talk, we focus on some recent work on scalable parallel methods for solving large sparse nonlinear system of equations arising from the discretization of highly nonlinear partial differential equations. In particular, we discuss a class of nonlinear domain decomposition methods, their efficient parallel implementations, and applications in several important problems including computational physics and computational biomechanics.
