Programmable Services for Enhancing Terminal Mobility

In the research area of Active and Programmable Networks, much progress has been made to design and develop the basic platforms needed for programmable networking. However, most of the research projects focused on the operating system part itself and neglected the services to be delivered to the users. In contrast, the FlexiNet project concentrates on providing new services rapidly and efficiently using programmable platforms. Within this project, one matter of interest is mobility support. Mobile IPv4 suffers from several inefficiencies (handoff latency, unoptimized routing, etc.) due to the fact that it has been designed for macro-mobility support with maximum interoperability to the pre-existing infrastructure. Using programmable services, service- and protocol-specific solutions can be provided in order to overcome these drawbacks. In his presentation, Mr. Tabery will outline current trends in Programmable Networks and their applicability in the context of terminal mobility.

Peter Tabery studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Munich University of Technology, Germany. He received his master's degree in 2000 and has been a member of the research staff at the Institute of Communication Networks of Prof. Eberspächer at TUM since then. His research interests include Programmable Networks with a special focus on Mobile Services. He is a member of both IEEE and the German "Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies" (VDE).
