Prospects for Evolutionary Computation

"Evolutionary Computation" refers to a class of algorithms inspired by biological evolution. Such algorithms have been widely applied in computer science and many other disciplines, and have had some impressive successes. In this talk I will describe my own recent research on evolutionary computation, including applications to image processing, computational biology, and complex systems modeling, as well as theoretical results on how these methods work and when they are likely to work well. I will also describe research on using spatial distribution and coevolutionary techniques to improve the performance of evolutionary methods. Finally, I will make some predictions about the most promising future directions for evolutionary and other biologically inspired approaches in computer science.
