Flexibility in the Design of Network and Transport Protocols: NP++, IP

The next generation of computer networks will have a wide dynamic range of speeds from gigabit fiber optic to slow speed wide area wireless networks. At the same time, network hardware architectures are evolving from cell-relay to variable length packet switches. Network and transport protocols must be flexible enough to operate with good performance at all of these speeds and across all of these hardware switching elements.

In this talk we will show how some of the design principles of NP++, a new protocol architecture being designed at Luleå University, are used to provide header compression for IP, and a more flexible UDP which we call "UDP-lite."
