Scalable Internet Service: The @Home Network Architecture
@Home Network
5/8/1997
3:15pm-4:15pm

@Home Network delivers high-speed information services to homes and businesses using the cable television infrastructure. Service is delivered over the "last mile" using coaxial links and cable modems, plus SONET (fiber optic) regional links. At the wide area @Home is a tier one Internet service provider, peering at the major Internet Network Access Points. For scalability, the network architecture includes widely distributed caching and replication, as well as the ability to support multicast, differentiated levels of service quality, and a 7x24 network operations center with visibility into the entire distributed infrastructure. @Home also acts as a content aggregator, working with content providers to replicate content onto @Home servers.

In this talk I will discuss @Home's vision, network architecture, and service design principles.

@Home's equity investors include leading cable companies Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI), Cox Communications, and Comcast Corporation, and venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Refreshments will be served immediately before the talk at 3:00pm.
Hosted by Dirk Grunwald.
