Parallel Schwarz Methods and Their Applications in Solving Nonlinear and Unsteady Differential Equations

The overlapping Schwarz method (OSM) was originally introduced by H. A. Schwarz in 1870 in an existence proof for elliptic boundary value problems defined in certain irregular regions. In the past 10 years, this method has attracted much attention as a convenient and powerful computational method for the numerical solution of a large class of partial differential equations (PDE) on parallel computers.

After a brief discussion of OSM and its scalability, we shall focus on some recent development on nonlinear and time dependent problems.

  1. We study OSM for a highly nonlinear PDE, namely the full potential equation of aerodynamics. Recent experiments on an IBM SP2 will be reported.

  2. We introduce a new variant of OSM referred to as the variable degree Schwarz method. With the new method, we study the numerical simulation of the dynamics of compressible Navier Stokes equations discretized on unstructured meshes.
