Discovery and Validation of Engineering Processes

Engineering process research is concerned with the problem of systematically managing, automating, and improving the activities of an engineering project. Deciding on particular improvements depends upon having models of processes and the knowledge that the models correspond to the actual activities of the project.

We have designed and implemented two process data analysis techniques that address this problem. The first, process discovery, reveals the behavioral structure of a process (i.e., its sequencing of activities, decision points, and iterative activities) and records that structure in a formal model. The second, process validation, reveals discrepancies between a formal model of a process and the actual activities of the project as captured in event data. The discovery techniques are based on statistical and algorithmic grammar inference, while the validation techniques are based on algorithms for string distance measurements.
