Design Environments in Support of Rethinking, Reinventing and Reengineering Education as a Lifelong Process
Department of Computer Science
11/30/1995
3:45pm-5:00pm

The goal of our new research center for "LifeLong Learning and Design" is to rethink, reinvent, and re-engineer education as a lifelong process centered upon design activities. To this aim, we define conceptual frameworks, design innovative computational systems embodying those frameworks, and evaluate them in realistic environments.

Our approach transcends older frameworks of education which cannot be transformed through the mere use of technology. New frameworks must instead be devised to support lifelong learning -- frameworks that include the integration of learning, working, and collaborating; the engagement in authentic problems; learning on demand; intrinsic motivation; and the creation of new content and domain areas.

The fundamental challenge in creating design environments is to make them simultaneously open-ended and supportive. The presentation will include demonstrations of some of our current systems building efforts substantiating our approach.

Refreshments will be served prior to the talk.
