WhozThat? Evolving an Ecosystem for Context-Aware Mobile Social Networks
Department of Computer Science

Traditional social networks were often defined in terms of personal relations which were in effect answers to the simple question "Who's that?" New technologies are now enabling the automatic exchange of this "WhozThat" information in real-time (and in "real places"). Increased adoption of new mobile technologies and use of their ability to exchange context information between users allows for real-time analysis and use of complex "networks" of data. This talk will present a project called "WhozThat" in which wireless technology was used to exchange social network identification within certain physical areas. This identification was then used to retrieve social network information for users within the space that was then processed to support unique applications with reacted personal preferences, relations, and other contextual information associated with those within the space.

Furthermore, it will be discussed how a system like WhozThat may support an entire ecosystem on which increasingly complex context-aware applications can be built; that is, once the environment knows who one is, the environment can adapt itself based on the individual's identity or even the collective tastes of a local group. Finally, the security and privacy implications of such an ecosystem will be discussed.

Sponsored by the Department of Applied Mathematics.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
