Visualizing High Dynamic Range Datasets

Over the last two decades, visualization has been established as a primary way of analyzing and interpreting vast amount of data generated by acquisition and computational simulation techniques. Large datasets with complex phenomena and wide dynamic range of physical properties impose significant challenges for successful visualization.

In this talk, I will discuss methods and systems I have developed to visualize high dynamic range datasets and their applications in Earth and Space Sciences. I will first present an interference-inspired framework for visualizing high dynamic range surface deformation. Our framework is applied to simulations of rupture fault displacements during tsunamogenic earthquake events, which are vital to understanding the subsequent wave propagation. I will then introduce my work on high-dynamic-range volume visualization (HDR VolVis) that faithfully visualizes high resolution volume datasets with wide numerical ranges on PCs with commodity graphics cards. Our HDR VolVis system performs high precision volume rendering followed by dynamic tone mapping to preserve details on regular display devices. By leveraging modern commodity graphics hardware and out-of-core acceleration, our system can produce effective and faithful visualization of large size and high precision volume data.
