Application Performance of Terascale Systems

The large gap between peak performance and application performance on most HPC
systems has widely been recognized. Thus, deep application performance studies
are required to prepare the procurement of new leading class computer systems.
Supporting the installation of a new NEC SX-8 vector machine at HLR Stuttgart
(9 TFlop/s) and a new SGI Altix at LRZ Munich (32 TFlop/s in 2006; 69 TFlop/s
in 2007), my group has performed extensive performance studies with special
focus on CFD applications (Finite-Volume & Lattice Boltzmann). The
characteristics of a wide range of single-and dual-core processor systems
(Intel Xeon/Itanium, AMD Opteron, IBM Power) are discussed with small kernels.
A parallel Lattice Boltzmann code is used to test massively parallel systems
and to comment on the value of vector machines for High-End Computing.
