Building Environments for EUD: A Model-Based Approach
Piero Mussio
Università degli Studi de Milano

End-User Development (EUD) and tailoring is characterized by several phenomena, which have been studied separately and separately faced in the development of EUD environments. A recently proposed model of HCI is used to study these phenomena in a unique frame. This model recognizes explicitly that each message in an interaction process is subject to two interpretations, one performed by the human and one performed by the machine according to the programs embedded in it. The closer are the two interpretations the more usable is the system by the human. Starting from these premises, a bottom-up approach (from observation to theory) to the development software environments designed to support various activities of EUD is illustrated. The approach requires users to directly collaborate to the system design and to the tailoring process to balance the effects of the phenomena. The strategy is illustrated, outlining its implementation through web-based prototypes.

Sponsored by the Center for Lifelong Learning & Design.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
