Colloquium - Castanos

ECCR 105

Early Experience on the Blue Gene/L Prototype
José G. Castanos
IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center

The Blue Gene/L is a jointly funded research partnership between IBM and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This massively parallel system of 65,536 nodes is based on a new architecture that exploits system-on-a-chip, low cost, embedded Power PC technology to deliver target peak processing power of 180/360 teraFLOPS. The machine is scheduled to be operational in the 2004-2005 time frame, at price/performance and power consumption/performance targets unobtainable with conventional architectures. Early prototypes with 512 nodes of this new architecture are already operational.

In this talk we discuss our bringup experience and the state of the system software and programming environments, and we present preliminary performance results. See Blue Gene Project for more information.

Hosted by Henry Tufo in conjunction with CSCI 4576/CSCI 7000 High-Performance Scientific Computing 1.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
