Software Requirements for Mobile Applications

Mobile internet applications are inherently different from applications used
with desktop computers and traditional internet applications. Usage patterns,
user interfaces, and bandwidth are just a few of the key differences.
Furthermore, different content formats are needed for different classes of
devices in addition to that needed for traditional web browsers.
This talk surveys the key issues of building mobile applications, and describes
a general framework for the architecture of these applications, including
software development platforms, using Java and XML standards.
Tony Wasserman is Director, Mobile Middleware Lab, in HP's Middleware Division.
He was Vice President, West Coast Labs, for Bluestone Software when it was
acquired by HP. Wasserman was with Interactive Development Environments, Inc.
(IDE), as Chairman (1983-1996), President, and CEO (1983-1993). Wasserman is
both an ACM and IEEE Fellow. He received his AB in Mathematics and Physics
from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD in Computer Sciences
from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
