DaAgent: A Dependable Agent-based Computing System for the Internet

An agent-based computing model has been described as the next evolution in distributed computing. This model is particularly useful for computing over the Internet. The key component in this model is a mobile agent that performs a distributed computation by moving independently and asynchronously from one node to another in a distributed system. It differs from a traditional operating system process in two important characteristics: (1) location awareness: unlike an operating system process, an agent knows where it is executing in a distributed system at any point in time, and (2) communication awareness: unlike an operating system process, an agent is aware of the communication network and makes an informed and independent decision to move from one node to another during execution.

We have designed and implemented an agent-based computing system called DaAgent. This system addresses three issues that are critical for an agent-based computing system to be successfully deployed in an Internet computing environment. These issues are security, fault tolerance, and heterogeneity. In this talk, we will first describe the design and implementation of DaAgent. We have experimented with several security and fault-tolerance protocols in DaAgent. We will discuss in detail the design and implementation of some of these protocols. Finally, we will discuss our experience with using DaAgent in the Internet computing environment.
