Colloquium - Atanasoff

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer
John V. Atanasoff II
President, CEO, and Chairman of Colorado MEDTech, Inc.

The first electronic digital computer was built at Iowa State University by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Dr. Clifford Berry, between 1939 and 1942. Among many other firsts, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (the ABC) was the first to employ binary arithmetic, separate memory and computing functions, and electronic amplifiers as on-off switches.

In 1997, engineers at Iowa State unveiled a working replica of the ABC, built to memorialize this pioneering effort. Thanks to Iowa State University and Boulder technology leader John V. Atanasoff, II, the replica ABC will be on display in the Engineering Library at CU, from January 10 through January 27.

In this special presentation Mr. Atanasoff will introduce the ABC and the replica to the CU audience. Those who wish to do so can view the replica in the library following the presentation.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
